Businesses in Indian Country
Native American owned businesses have historically faced numerous obstacles, not least of which were exclusion from consideration by large companies, organizations and governments arising out of racism, lack of capital, denial of access to training and expertise, and a host of other disadvantages.
While many of the legal obstacles have been removed in recent decades, Native American businesses still face some residual problems and even when these are overcome, still find themselves in an extremely competitive marketplace. Some are able to take advantage of minority owned business set asides in the Federal and state marketplaces, others avail themselves of Indian Nations projects closed to all but Indian owned businesses. Below will be found businesses that have managed to overcome these obstacles and grow.
Please note, businesses primarily engaged in the sale of arts and craft items produced by Native Americans, either newly produced or antique items, will be found in the arts page and businesses primarily engaged in selling music related goods, either recordings, videos, or instruments, will be found on the music page. Businesses offering cultural instruction are found on the culture page. Finally, casinos and gaming related businesses are found on the gaming page.
